BCCL Partners with OpenAI to Expand News Discovery and Publishing

Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd (BCCL) has entered into a strategic partnership with OpenAI to make journalism from its publications more accessible and discoverable through ChatGPT.

Under the partnership, content from participating BCCL publications, including The Times of India and The Economic Times, will be surfaced in ChatGPT when relevant to users’ queries. Selected summaries or excerpts will identify the original publication and include direct links to the full articles, allowing readers to access the complete reporting and additional context on BCCL’s platforms.

The collaboration will cover live reporting as well as content from BCCL’s English and Indian-language publications, creating another channel through which readers can discover the group’s journalism.

The partnership will also explore the use of OpenAI technology across BCCL’s products, reader services and internal operations. Potential applications include archive discovery, research, data analysis, translation, reader services and business operations.

Mohit Jain, Chief Operating Officer and Board Member at BCCL, said the partnership reflects the company’s efforts to make its journalism accessible as technology and reader habits evolve. He emphasised that the collaboration will preserve the source, context and identity of the original reporting.

OpenAI Vice President of Media Partnerships Varun Shetty said BCCL plays an important role in helping audiences understand India and the wider world. He added that the partnership would help ChatGPT users discover BCCL’s English and Indian-language journalism with clear attribution and direct links to original stories.

BCCL’s publications will retain their editorial independence. The editors and reporters at the publication will retain control over the process of reporting, verification, editing, and publishing, but any AI usage within the newsroom will be subject to the editorial standards and policies of the particular publication.

The deal comes as a part of the overall efforts made by OpenAI to collaborate with the publishers and to increase the access to trustworthy information as well as explore the opportunities of using AI to assist in news products and publishing.

For BCCL, the collaboration is one step closer to increasing the reach of their journalistic endeavors through the power of AI discovery, with attribution, access to original reporting, and editorial control preserved.
